A Deposit Measured in Releases
Escrow deposit update frequency for agile and DevOps teams
Escrow deposit update frequency determines whether released code matches what the licensee actually runs. For CTOs shipping weekly or daily, the concern is that escrow adds manual work to every sprint. A well-designed cadence avoids that by tying deposits to release events that already exist, rather than to the calendar.
How often should an escrow deposit be updated?
A practical rule is that the deposit should never trail production by more than one major release. The cadence then follows the release pattern:
Release pattern | Deposit trigger |
Quarterly or less frequent | Every production release |
Monthly | Every production release, or month-end |
Weekly or continuous | Every tagged production release, automated; full verification quarterly |
The escrow agreement should also set a minimum interval, so that a pause in releases does not leave the deposit unrefreshed indefinitely.
How can deposits be automated without slowing the pipeline?
An automated deposit is a post-release pipeline stage that packages and transmits escrow materials without human intervention. A typical sequence is:
- Production releases are tagged in version control.
- A pipeline stage packages the tagged source, the dependency manifest and the build scripts.
- The package is encrypted and transferred to the escrow agent through a secure channel, with a hash recorded.
- The agent confirms receipt and logs the matching checksum.
- Independent verification periodically builds a sampled deposit end to end.
Because the stage runs after deployment and asynchronously, it does not block a release.
What should never enter an automated deposit?
Production secrets, credentials and personal data should be excluded. Build documentation should describe how secrets are provisioned, not contain them. Personal data inside a deposit would bring the deposit within the obligations of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, which neither party needs for a continuity instrument.
Quick answers
Does automation replace verification? No. Receipt confirms that files arrived; verification confirms that they build and run.
Can deposits be incremental? Yes, provided the escrow agent can reconstruct a complete snapshot of any deposited release.
